Used to be Riki was pos 4 offlane who would roam, grab the bounty runes, and transition only into a late game core if game went super late and was usually just meant to scout and help pick off the enemy pos 5 in teamfights when nobody was caring.
With bounty runes being changed to 5 minutes this playstyle was no longer possible so he dropped out of the game. Now Icefraud has been buffing up his laning (while leaving other heroes who need laning buffs and are completely absent from competitive untouched but whatever) so this means he can make a come back. Dotabuff has him spread throughout all the lanes basically, offlane is most popular but he is run half as much safelane and half as much mid as well as roaming and jungling (is there a difference? Surely jungle doesn't mean hitting the creeps).
But given that his laning (ie auto attack and healing) have been so buffed, plus given how well he scales with farm and particularly how he can snowball easily by feeding off underfarmed supports if he ever gets ahead does it work better to give him farm priority in the lane, basically running a dual core carry/support but in the offlane instead?
Core item build looks like a wraith band or three, treads or phase (both seem about equal in terms of winrate), then diffusal, into basher. Lategame core items looks like bkb, butterfly, skadi, abyssal, diffusal, boots of travel which gives the best balance between damage output/tankiness/keeping heroes in the AoE of tricks of the trade/smokescreen to maximise killing potential. Given how he needs to farm all these items to scale the best seems giving him early farm to make sure he is more likely to snowball seems better. How do you do this in pubs though where offlane is usually "every man for himself" type situation and you are fighting for farm against some sort of strength offlaner.
One game I remember this useless beastmaster stole all the farm in the offlane even though I explained I wanted some. Ended up underfarmed and not able to kill supports, we ended up losing because even though beastmaster had necro 3, blink, solar crest, euls (almost 18k networth of items) all he did in fights was cast some spells and then was fucking useless and just got chewed up by the enemy carry while I was still only had 1 and a half core items (10k networth) yet did more damage than him with only 3 quarters of the gpm - if I had been allowed to get farm in the early game we would have probably won. https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3812762117
