I'm a student nearing graduation. I have worked at Canadian Tire Innovations on a co-op term. I worked with angularJS + Ruby on Rails to make features in a web-based app. Does DotaBuff consider people like me that are coming out of school and have some base experience with related technologies?
What are some unique technical challenges that dotabuff faces? I bet dealing with the massive amounts of data is one of them.
How's the relationship with Valve? Do you get special access to their API or other data? I remember dotabuff was hit pretty hard when they added a privacy feature to dota accounts.
We're looking into more entry level stuff. Customer service is a big pain point. and we plan to hire for that shortly. What we don't want to have happen is try to hire for everything at once and get no real work done. We're a small enough team that hiring is pretty disruptive.

There's disruptive and then there's disrespectful.
I don't know if a forum member-ish will work well as a moderator on this forum cuz people will take decisions upon wether they like people or not. Like if Havoc was to be a mod I could spam animeporn without getting banned

This was also over 12 months ago when Dotabuff was actively hiring, I applied for the role and was told I was being considered and had made it through the preliminary section pool and would have to wait for the next stage (some form of online interview). 13 months later and I'm still waiting.
Students with experience in relevant tech will absolutely be considered. Our last hire was straight out of school and has been doing great. If you're just finishing school and don't have any web experience it would be a harder case to make.
Technical challenges: One big one is that we are sorta in the big data area. We use a lot of different data stores to maximize speed for the way we intend to use the data. Sometimes that puts us in a situation where we have a lot of data, but aren't able to query cool stuff for fun or blog content due to the complexity. We have over 100TB of hot data, and keeping everything running smoothly is an ongoing challenge.
As far as I can tell Valve likes to keep a pretty hands off approach with community sites. We don't get access to extra data.
In the past when we've done hiring for entry level positions we haven't done the best job of responding to everyone, and I apologize. Going through hundreds of applications (esp when people have put a lot of time and effort into them) and attempting to give everyone a fair shot is really time consuming. I'm not happy with how some of our hiring efforts have gone in the past. We've made changes to (hopefully) fix the issues such as slower hiring, better tools, etc.
I agree with you that it can be time consuming but I was told I was being considered and had 'passed' the first stage of being chosen out of the applicants and someone will be in touch with me soon to discuss the role and my suitability. This was when I was ignored and that annoyed me more, had I never received a reply I would have taken it as a no.
Actually if spamming anime was seen as offensive to some or annoying I would ask you offlane if you could stop or you would force my hand. I would remove it and where I could take a time to explain to people what they were banned, or had a removed post for, as I have most DB people on steam so talking to them in steam chat would take a few minutes. This is the one thing I felt never happened, was the consistency of moderating.

Its like when you're a child and you get up to shit when your parents are gone but not when they're home. I think people would start behaving a little better if there was a resident mod that was around consistently and not just as a sparatic ban hammer type of mod.
You don't even have to do much and I said this before, you just have to have a presence that prominent enough so people know someones watching.

well, i faced exactly same situation several times in my life, with KPMG for example - and this company has one of the most well-organized and polite HR departments ik.

i was looking for an internship in consulting and kpmg was one of the best places for me, but they closed the position i was applying for couple of days in before the last stage of selection (interview), which was kinda sad; but in the end i found a better (=more interesting) job so I'm not even upset, xD.
No I work another firm, we work very closely with KPMG. They recently bought a Dutch firm called Crimson Wing and we're working with them on a Dynamics AX implementation. I am not married but I do have a kid in the US with someone that I have been separated with for about 5 years so I don't have the total responsibility of looking after him physically, just financially.

I've never not had a job, but always after getting an initial call back I get some sort of follow up, even an ultimate rejection.

kpmg is primarly an audition firm, part of so-known big4, but same as other international accounting companies it has several consulting departments .
