I have a theory about how valve does it. If they did it, it'd be quite genius, really. I got the idea when playing with a friend of mine. He noticed that every game we play together is just miserable. Our teammates are the biggest dick bags. On the other hand, my games are always like that, and his games aren't. We both have about the same rating, his is maybe a tad higher. But what could cause this when we both have good MMR?
Reports.
The idea I figured out is that MM has a parameter that encourages putting people with high reports together. It's sort of like a graded LPQ - the worse you are, the worse your teammates become until the final report puts you into LPQ.
Keep in mind LPQ-type players can be good mechanically (or even in terms of meta), but they are jackasses. This will cause them to do things, even if they know they are wrong, out of sheer self-entitlement. E.g. they won't pick supports even if one is desperately needed, they may rage after a small incident and abandon supporting a lane entirely, etc. If they were playing with friends in that exact situation, they would behave the right way. Again, they aren't bad, they're dicks. In other words, you may wonder why such "bad" players get into your games - they aren't. They're dicks.
lol toooooooooooooooooooooooo feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew players know how to judge the performance of other players correctly, yet valve disregard this valuable resource even further lol
INSTEAD, they invented the best troll system ever, REPORT, lol, what the hell 4 feeders report you for not been feeding with them together, let the trolling begin
